Peotone Staves Off Herscher Comeback for 28-25 Victory

PEOTONE — In a gritty, defensive battle on January 8, the Peotone Blue Devils relied on a fast start and tenacious rebounding to hold off the Herscher Tigers, securing a narrow 28-25 victory at home.

Points were at a premium throughout the contest, but Peotone established a critical edge in the opening quarter. The Blue Devils’ offense found its rhythm early, outscoring Herscher 10-4 in the first eight minutes. That six-point cushion ultimately proved to be the difference in the game, as the two teams played nearly even basketball for the remaining three periods.

Senior Peyton Bisping led the offensive charge for Peotone, finishing as the lone player in double digits with 10 points. She also contributed on the perimeter, hitting one of the team’s three-pointers.

While Bisping paced the scoring, freshman Payton Pape delivered an impressive all-around performance. Pape tallied 8 points while anchoring the defense with a game-high 5 steals and 2 blocked shots. Her ability to disrupt passing lanes was complemented by junior Olivia Moe, who controlled the glass with a team-high 7 rebounds and added 4 steals of her own.

Herscher refused to go away quietly, cutting into the lead before halftime. The Tigers outscored Peotone 7-6 in the second quarter, sending the teams to the locker rooms with the Blue Devils leading 16-11. The defensive intensity ramped up in the third quarter, which ended in a 5-5 stalemate.

In the final frame, Herscher mounted a late rally, outscoring the hosts 9-7. However, Peotone’s defense forced enough turnovers—tallying 15 steals as a team—to preserve the win.

Addison Brandau added 4 points and 4 rebounds for the Blue Devils, while Emma Orzel contributed 3 points and chipped in on the boards.
