Wilmington Tops Peotone in Defensive Battle, 40-29
PEOTONE — The Peotone Blue Devils struggled to find their offensive rhythm on [Day of Week], falling to the Wilmington Wildcats 40-29 in a hard-fought conference matchup.
Offensive execution proved difficult for the Blue Devils from the opening tip. Peotone managed just four points in the first quarter, allowing Wilmington to jump out to an early 10-4 lead. While the Blue Devils stabilized the ship in the second quarter, matching the Wildcats with 10 points apiece, they could not cut into the deficit before halftime.
The third quarter proved pivotal, as Wilmington outscored Peotone 12-6, extending their lead and putting the game out of reach despite a spirited fourth-quarter effort where the Blue Devils outscored the Wildcats 9-8.
Peotone’s offense was balanced but lacked a breakout scorer on a night where the team shot 28 percent (9-of-32) from the floor. Senior Addison Brandau, junior Payton Schnelle, and freshman Payton Pape shared the team lead in scoring with six points each.
Schnelle was a key factor in the paint, leading the team with four rebounds and recording a blocked shot. The Blue Devils were active on the glass, with contributions coming from across the roster. Junior Olivia Moe, junior Callie Weiss, and Pape all pulled down three rebounds each.
Senior Madi Schroeder facilitated the offense, dishing out a team-high three assists while adding two points and two rebounds. Senior Peyton Bisping contributed five points, including one of the team’s two 3-pointers.
Turnovers plagued the Blue Devils throughout the contest, with the team committing 20 total turnovers, hampering their ability to mount a sustained comeback.
Peotone will look to bounce back and sharpen their shooting in their next contest.
