207U Board Outlines Long-Term Planning Timeline, Reviews Academic and District Updates

Peotone CUSD 207U board members emphasized long-term planning and reviewed academic progress and district initiatives during their Feb. 18 board meeting.

In discussing facility planning, board members clarified that current actions represent the beginning of a multi-year process rather than an immediate final decision.

“This isn’t the time to decide everything,” board member Tim Stoub said. “This is to sort of chart that next step.”

Officials indicated that once direction is established, the district would enter a nine- to 12-month planning phase, followed by bidding and construction. The overall timeline was described as a two- to three-year process.

Academic Growth Reported

Administrators across the district shared winter assessment data showing growth in both math and reading.

At Peotone Junior High School, enrollment currently stands at 273 students. Winter NWEA MAP results showed the percentage of students in the lowest two math performance categories decreased from 33% to 29%, while students in the highest categories increased from 43% to 45%.

In reading, the percentage of students in the lowest categories decreased from 28% to 24%, while students in the high and high-average categories increased from 44% to 49%.

High school enrollment currently stands at 432 students, including 103 freshmen, 86 sophomores, 111 juniors and 112 seniors.

Counselors are meeting individually with students to plan next year’s schedules, and the school has implemented a postsecondary planning tool within PowerSchool that allows students and families to track graduation progress in real time.

Administrators also highlighted ACT-focused instructional work aligned with the district’s school improvement plan. Departments are analyzing internal data to strengthen literacy and problem-solving skills across subject areas.

“We’re pleased with the buy-in we’re getting from the kids and the staff,” one administrator said.

Student Activities and Events

District schools reported a range of student activities and events:

  • Wrestlers were recognized ahead of state competition.
  • The junior high hosted a winter dance featuring a rock-paper-scissors competition.
  • Peotone Intermediate Center and Junior High students are preparing for performances of Matilda Jr., with public shows scheduled for Feb. 28 and March 1.
  • Elementary students celebrated the 100th day of school, Valentine’s Day events and National Make a Friend Day.
  • The district continued its “Big Blue District Day” tradition, celebrating school spirit and recognizing staff.

Technology and Operations Updates

The district’s technology department implemented a mandatory password reset for student accounts for the first time in several years. Officials reported a significant reduction in phishing and spoofing attempts in the week following the change. An additional email filtering service is scheduled to go live next week.

The transportation department announced rollout of the Stopfinder routing app for families and recognized February as “Love the Bus” month.

Facilities staff reported that heating systems performed well during recent cold weather, though a regional salt shortage required the district to secure palletized bag salt to maintain safe parking lots and walkways.

In other action, the board approved policy updates, the creation of a new junior high volleyball activity fund account, disposal of non-fire-rated furniture identified during safety inspections, and personnel items.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for March 2.
