Bishop McNamara Offense Overpowers Peotone Baseball in 17-2 Non-Conference Tilt
Despite grabbing an early lead in the first inning, the Peotone varsity baseball team fell victim to a relentless offensive attack and a combined one-hitter from Bishop McNamara, dropping Monday’s home non-conference matchup 17-2.
Bishop McNamara opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning, but Peotone responded immediately. Utilizing patience at the plate and capitalizing on a Bishop McNamara defensive miscue, the hosts plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame. Tyler Leitelt accounted for Peotone’s lone hit of the afternoon during the opening rally and eventually crossed the plate to give the home team a 2-1 advantage.
That lead would be short-lived, however, as the Fightin’ Irish offense quickly hit its stride. Bishop McNamara methodically added single runs in the second and third innings to reclaim the lead, then broke the game open with a three-run fourth and a two-run fifth.
Senior Ian Irps led the charge for the visitors with a flawless 4-for-4 performance at the plate, highlighted by a home run, two runs scored, and a pair of stolen bases. Senior Coen Demack was also a persistent threat on the basepaths, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three steals.
A nine-run explosion in the top of the sixth inning firmly put the game out of reach for Peotone. The hosts struggled defensively throughout the contest, committing six errors that ultimately allowed eight unearned runs to cross the plate.
Lincoln Tierney handled the bulk of the pitching duties for Peotone, tossing four innings and allowing four earned runs while striking out one. Alex Chenoweth and Nick Moore also saw action on the mound in relief.
On the other side, Bishop McNamara’s pitching tandem of junior Michael Clark and senior Logan Popovich slammed the door after the first inning. Clark started and struck out four over three innings, allowing just one hit and two unearned runs. Popovich was virtually unhittable in relief, striking out seven batters over three no-hit, scoreless frames to close out the six-inning victory.
For Peotone, Kayden Derkacy found ways to get on base, drawing a pair of walks, while Declan McMaster earned a trip to first base after being hit by a pitch.
