A spectacular pitching duel featuring a combined 22 strikeouts took center stage on Monday afternoon, but it was the host Bishop McNamara varsity softball team that managed to scratch across just enough offense to secure a 2-0 non-conference victory over Peotone.

Fans in attendance were treated to an absolute clinic inside the pitching circle. Bishop McNamara sophomore Joslynn Dole and Peotone senior S. Klawitter went toe-to-toe, trading scoreless frames and racking up 11 strikeouts apiece.

Dole earned the complete-game shutout for the Fightin’ Irish, keeping the Peotone lineup off-balance for all seven innings. She allowed just two hits and navigated around four walks to secure the victory without surrendering a single run. The Bishop McNamara defense provided flawless support behind her, completing the game without committing an error.

On the opposing side, Klawitter took a hard-luck loss despite a brilliant and incredibly efficient outing. The Peotone ace tossed six innings, issuing zero walks and striking out 11 batters while giving up just five hits and one earned run.

Bishop McNamara finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Maddy Weiland, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a stolen base, utilized her speed to cross the plate and give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Fightin’ Irish added a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to double their lead. Junior Rhaya DePaolo was a key contributor in the clutch, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Abbie Bysor also ripped a double for the hosts.

Peotone struggled to string together hits against Dole, but a few players found ways to apply pressure on the basepaths. Junior Payton Schnelle accounted for one of Peotone’s two hits and aggressively swiped a pair of bases. Klawitter helped her own cause by going 1-for-2 with a walk, while sophomore A. Christenberry utilized a patient eye to draw two walks and steal a base.

Defensively, freshman Mary Klawitter was a stalwart at first base for Peotone, recording a game-high 12 putouts. However, a couple of costly fielding errors ultimately made the difference in a razor-thin contest.
