Peotone Capitalizes on Errors to Defeat Streator 4-2

The Peotone varsity baseball team used a quick start and a dominant complete-game pitching performance to secure a 4-2 conference victory over host Streator on Monday afternoon. Peotone made the most of Streator’s defensive struggles to build an early lead and never looked back.

Peotone ambushed Streator right out of the gate, erupting for three runs in the top of the first inning to take immediate control of the contest. Streator responded by scratching across a single run in the bottom of the first and another in the second inning to trim the deficit to 3-2, but the Peotone pitching staff shut down the hosts for the remainder of the afternoon.

Tyler Leitelt was masterful on the mound for Peotone. The starter tossed a complete game, allowing zero earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight Streator batters without issuing a single walk. Leitelt pounded the strike zone all day, throwing 91 pitches to earn the hard-fought victory.

Offensively, Kayden Derkacy provided the loudest swing of the game for Peotone, launching a solo home run during a 1-for-4 afternoon. Cole Peppers, Declan McMaster, Lincoln Tierney, and T. Harshfield tallied the remaining hits for the visitors.

Streator struggled defensively throughout the contest, committing a staggering eight fielding errors that allowed Peotone to extend innings and manufacture runs. Streator starting pitcher Clay Christoff battled through five innings despite the lack of defensive support, taking the hard-luck loss after allowing four runs—only three of which were earned—on four hits while racking up nine strikeouts. Keegan Gassman provided two innings of scoreless, hitless relief to keep the hosts within striking distance.

At the plate, Colin Byers paced the Streator offense by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Isaac Melvin, Talon Melvin, Clay Christoff, Cole Winterrowd, and Keegan Angelico each added a hit for the hosts, but the lineup could not break through against Leitelt when it mattered most.
