Kankakee Battles Back to Edge Peotone 7-6 in Non-Conference Thriller

The Kankakee varsity baseball team showed its resilience on Friday, overcoming multiple deficits to secure a hard-fought 7-6 home victory against Peotone. In a back-and-forth non-conference clash characterized by opportunistic offense and heavy strikeout totals, Kankakee used a decisive three-run fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Peotone struck the first blow, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs. Kankakee immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame, capitalizing on walks and defensive miscues to plate three runs and capture a 3-2 advantage. The lead was short-lived, however, as Peotone responded with two more runs in the top of the third.

Trailing 4-3, Kankakee manufactured a run in the bottom of the third to knot the game at 4-4. The contest remained deadlocked until the top of the fifth, when Peotone pushed two runs across—highlighted by a home run from T. Harshfield—to reclaim a 6-4 lead.

Refusing to fold, the Kankakee offense went to work in the bottom of the fifth. Displaying excellent plate discipline, Kankakee batters drew crucial walks to set the table. Devin Arbour delivered the defining blow for the hosts, anchoring the lineup with a 2-for-4 performance and driving in a game-high three RBIs. J. Hernandez also came through in the clutch, plating two runs despite not recording a hit, utilizing a pair of walks to fuel the offense. J. Villafuerte was a constant presence on the basepaths, crossing the plate three times. Kankakee’s three-run surge in the fifth gave them a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish.

On the mound, Kankakee’s pitching staff racked up an impressive 15 strikeouts to keep the Peotone lineup in check. Bentley Deany weathered the storm during the middle innings, striking out seven over four innings of work while allowing just two earned runs. Bryce Deany was dominant in his three innings of action, allowing zero runs on two hits while striking out eight batters to help slam the door shut.

Peotone’s pitching also recorded heavy strikeout numbers, with starter Lincoln Tierney fanning seven Kankakee batters over 3.1 innings while allowing just one earned run. Declan McMaster and Cole Peppers entered in relief, combining for four additional strikeouts. Harshfield led the Peotone offense with his two-run homer, while McMaster added an RBI double.

Despite outhitting Kankakee 5-4, Peotone was undone by three costly fielding errors and Kankakee’s ability to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Kankakee’s bullpen tossed two scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh to close out the 7-6 victory.
