Late Errors Doom Peotone in 4-0 Loss to Manteno Despite Klawitter’s 16-Strikeout Gem

A classic pitchers’ duel came unraveled in the final inning on Monday afternoon, as the Manteno varsity softball team plated four late runs to hand host Peotone a 4-0 conference loss.

Senior ace Klawitter was phenomenal in the circle for Peotone, carrying a scoreless tie deep into the seventh inning. She ultimately tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Klawitter dominated the strike zone, issuing only one walk and striking out an incredible 16 batters on 111 pitches.

The game remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the top of the seventh frame. However, defensive miscues proved costly for the hosts. Peotone committed three errors on the afternoon, opening the door for Manteno to finally break the stalemate. The visitors pushed four runs across the plate—three of which were unearned—to suddenly take a commanding 4-0 lead.

Peotone’s lineup struggled to generate run support, managing just three hits while striking out 12 times against a locked-in Manteno pitching staff. Klawitter, Ava Kosmos, and Payton Schnelle provided the lone hits for the hosts, each finishing 1-for-3 at the plate. Adyson Kosmos drew Peotone’s only walk of the game, but the team was unable to string together the momentum needed to answer Manteno’s late surge.

Despite the masterful performance from Klawitter, the seventh-inning Manteno rally proved to be the difference, leaving Peotone to absorb the hard-luck defeat.
