Defensive Miscues Cost Peotone in 6-1 Conference Loss to Manteno
Despite a sharp 12-strikeout performance in the circle from senior S. Klawitter, the Peotone varsity softball team was undone by defensive struggles on Tuesday, falling 6-1 in a road conference matchup against Manteno. Six Peotone errors extended innings and allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate, ultimately erasing an early lead.
Peotone struck first, manufacturing a run in the top of the first inning to take an immediate 1-0 advantage. S. Klawitter sparked the offense out of the leadoff spot, eventually crossing the plate on an RBI double ripped by junior Payton Schnelle.
Armed with a 1-0 lead, S. Klawitter went to work in the circle. The senior ace kept the Manteno bats quiet through the first two innings, overpowering the opposing lineup. She finished the afternoon with 12 strikeouts over six innings of work, allowing just five hits and two earned runs while throwing 104 pitches.
However, the game shifted in the bottom of the third inning. Capitalizing on Peotone’s fielding miscues, Manteno broke the shutout and plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The hosts duplicated that success in the fourth inning, utilizing the extra outs provided by the Peotone defense to tack on three more runs and extend their advantage to 6-1.
While Manteno played flawless defense—committing zero errors on the day—Peotone struggled to mount a comeback. The visitors recorded six hits as a team, featuring a trio of doubles. Schnelle led the way, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and the team’s lone RBI. S. Klawitter also recorded a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Freshman Mary Klawitter finished 1-for-2 with a double and a hit-by-pitch, and sophomore A. Christenberry added a double of her own. Ava Kosmos showed patience at the plate, drawing a pair of walks, while Jillian Roark executed two sacrifice bunts to move runners over. Despite these efforts and consistently putting runners on base, Peotone stranded seven baserunners and was held scoreless over the final six frames.
