Grijalva, Butierez headed for rematch in congressional race
Arizona’s 7th Congressional District will have another showdown between U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Goodyear, and Republican Daniel Butierez Sr.
Both of these candidates ran unopposed in their respective primaries Tuesday.
This marks the second consecutive year that voters in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District will choose between the two candidates.
In a special election last year, Adelita Grijalva beat Butierez by almost 40 percentage points.
The upcoming November general election will be the third time Butierez, a small business owner, has attempted to win this congressional seat. In 2024, he lost to the late Raúl Grijalva, Adelita Grijalva’s father, by nearly 30 percentage points.
Adelita Grijalva has a cash-on-hand advantage over Butierez. She has $427,977 while he has $11,399, according to Federal Election Commission records.
A Republican has never represented the 7th Congressional District since its establishment in 2003.
In Arizona’s 8th Congressional District Democratic primary, Bernadette Greene Placentia defeated Raymond Keeler, according to unofficial election results from the Arizona Secretary of State’s website.
She will now run against U.S. Rep. Abe Hamadeh, R-Surprise, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
On social media, an X account associated with Hamadeh’s campaign, Abe Hamadeh War Room, thanked voters for “renominating” the representative.
“Abe will keep fighting for secure borders, economic strength, and our freedoms, delivering real results for AZ-08 families every day,” the post said.
Hamadeh, who has represented the 8th Congressional District since 2025, has a cash-on-hand advantage over Greene Placentia.
Federal Election Commission records show that Hamadeh has $384,185 of cash on hand, while Greene Placentia has $190,394.
The last time a Democrat represented the 8th Congressional District was in 2013.
