JOLIET, IL – A crucial infrastructure project in Manhattan Township is set to move forward after the Will County Board awarded a nearly $1.5 million contract for the replacement of the Kankakee Street Bridge over Jackson Creek.

On Thursday, the board approved a resolution confirming the award to “D” Construction, Inc. of Coal City, which submitted the lowest bid at $1,465,938.49. The project is being funded through a combination of the Manhattan Road District’s motor fuel tax funds and county bridge tax funds.

The scope of the work is extensive and includes the complete removal of the existing bridge. The new structure will be a single-span, cast-in-place concrete slab bridge. The project also involves constructing new full-depth hot-mix asphalt pavement approaches, aggregate shoulders, guardrails, and stream regrading.

Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with an estimated completion date of August 21, 2026. According to the project summary, the roadway will be closed to all traffic during construction, and a posted detour route will be implemented to guide drivers around the work zone. The Public Works and Transportation Committee recommended the contract award earlier this month before it received final approval from the full County Board.
